About the Workshop¶
Origin and Purpose¶
The Flame of Provision Service Preparation Workshop was developed to fill a gap that many faith-driven ministries encounter: volunteers arrive ready to serve, but without the spiritual grounding that makes service sustainable and Christ-centered. Practical service without spiritual conviction burns out; spiritual conviction without practical service stays theoretical. This workshop walks volunteers through both — the inward work of discovering purpose and listening to the Spirit, and the outward work of seeing need clearly and responding faithfully.
The curriculum is rooted in five God-given purposes drawn from Rick Warren's A Purpose Driven Life — Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry, and Mission — and traces a participant's journey from personal calling (Session 1) through spiritual sensitivity (Session 2), into compassionate vision (Session 3), and finally into the disciplines of a service-centered life (Session 4).
How the Workshop Is Structured¶
Two days, four sessions, three to four hours per session. The workshop is designed to be run as:
- A weekend intensive (Day 1 sessions on Saturday, Day 2 sessions on Sunday — or both days back-to-back)
- A four-week small-group series (one session per week, with reflection and ministry planning continuing between sessions)
- A leadership retreat module (paired with worship, meals, and longer prayer time, expanding to a full day per session)
Each session uses four document types, all included in this site and downloadable:
| Document | Audience | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Leader Guide | Facilitator | Session flow, key teaching points, scripture references, time allocations, reflection prompts to draw out the group |
| Group Discussion Prompts | Small-group leader | Structured questions for breakout discussion, with follow-up questions for deeper engagement |
| Ministry Planning Worksheet | Participant | A planning tool that turns each session's spiritual insights into concrete next steps for service |
| Reflection Worksheet | Participant | Personal, prayerful reflection on the session's central question — for use during the session and afterward |
What Participants Need¶
- A Bible (any translation) or a scripture access tool — YouVersion, Bible Gateway, Logos, or similar
- A printed copy of each session's Ministry Planning Worksheet and Reflection Worksheet
- Pen and paper for notes and prayer
- A willingness to engage honestly with both Scripture and one another
For leaders, we recommend reviewing the Workshop Outline before the first session and reading each Leader Guide the day before its session.
Theological Grounding¶
The Service Preparation Workshop is built on three convictions:
-
Christian service flows from worship and identity, not duty. Romans 12:1 frames service as a response of worship to God's mercy — the volunteer who serves out of obligation will not last; the volunteer who serves out of received grace will.
-
The Holy Spirit is the leader of ministry, not the volunteer. John 14:26, Romans 8:14, and Acts 13:2 show a Spirit who guides, teaches, and sends. The workshop teaches volunteers to listen first and act second.
-
Compassion is a learned posture, not a feeling. Philippians 2:5-8 describes Christ's deliberate humbling. Seeing others through Christ's eyes is a discipline volunteers practice, not a mood they wait for.
About Flame of Provision Ministries¶
Flame of Provision Ministries is a Charleston, South Carolina-based faith community pursuing service-based evangelism in the Charleston Tri-County region (Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties). The ministry's mission is to share the love of Christ by meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of underserved individuals — through transportation programs, food and shelter support, youth leadership development, and church partnership networks.
The Service Preparation Workshop is the discipleship foundation of that work. It is offered freely to any church, ministry, or believer wanting to walk the same path of service-based evangelism — whether or not you partner with Flame of Provision directly.
